With the long working week behind the budding Floodlit Challengers, Thursday the 18th of February saw a cold chill in the air as a light wind swept across Al Hamra providing perfect playing conditions for the competitors. The Floodlit Challenge played a re-jigged 2 Ball Scramble format as each team received 10% of their combined handicap indexes, with the only stipulation being each team member must use a minimum of two tee shots.
There were many favorable team combinations out on the golf course that could have walked away with the evening’s top honours, but it was the family pairing of Dave and Helen Pilfold who combined devastatingly to take the title. Dave Pilfold's recent hot form with the clubs went hand in hand with Helen’s rapidly improving golf as the pair plotted their way strategically around the tricky floodlit 9. Their gross score of 39 was created from 1 birdie, 4 bogeys and 4 pars with the deduction of their 5.4 handicap giving them the winning nett score of 33.6.
Byron Kraemer and Ken Shaw stood tall as they finished in overall second place a mere 0.2 shots adrift of the winning pair. Kraemer, in his first floodlit appearance of the year, and Shaw played a solid game as a pair finished with a gross score of 38 and nett 33.8. The highlights of their round were birdies at the difficult dogleg 2nd hole and par 4 17th hole as their golfing styles formed a formidable partnership. The third placed team on the evening consisted of the resident Director of Golf, Andrew Pilfold and Rick Piper. As a team they returned a very commendable gross score of 37 which with their handicap of 2.8 deducted gave them a 34.2 nett and outright third place. The weeks W.o.W. award was collected by Kurt Christensen and Dave Martin.
Special Event Winners
Nearest the Pin (4th Hole) – Valentina claimed the award at the par 3, 4th hole as her fantastically placed tee shot finished in the heart of the green providing her partner with the opportunity of holing a birdie putt for the pair and giving her the special event honors.
Nearest the Pin (7th Hole) – The nearest the pin event at the 7th hole was blessed with a touch of ‘Kraemer Magic’ as Byron Kraemer walked away with the award. With his trusty club in hand Kraemer hit a perfect tee shot that floated in over the bunker and ran up to the tight pin location.
